This one is personal.
Every year in the classroom, it happened. Sometimes it was during late fall, getting ready for the winter and holiday concerts and activities. Sometimes it was in the spring, in the heat of all those contest rehearsals and solo and ensemble activities. It even happened during those exciting days right before school started.
What happened was a feeling of absolute dread and hopelessness about my job, my situation, and whether I was making progress or making a difference in my students’ lives. It never really went away, in hindsight, but it did lessen at times. Now, I know that feeling was not reality, and it never diminished my love for my craft or for my students. Although I am an extremely stubborn person and was in complete denial at the time, I was experiencing burnout. Burnout impacted not only my teaching but also my long-term health, and it strained my relationships with family, friends and colleagues most of all.
This second webinar in the series is special. Joining us is author and choral director Amelia Nagoski, DMA. Together with her sister, Emily, they co-authored “Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle,” and their subsequent TED Talk has garnered over 300,000 views on the subject.
If you’re a choral director, choreographer, band director, parent or volunteer, I encourage you to join us. We only have space for the first 500 registrants.
All webinars will be accessible through our YouTube Channel.
Join us on November 19 at 8:00 ET / 7:00 CT, where Amelia will present and host a Q&A.
